If you’ve watched even one episode of Prison Break, you’ll remember Sucre (pronounced “Soucre”), Michael Scofield’s cellmate at Fox River Penitentiary. Sentenced to 5 years in prison for aggravated armed robbery, he became engaged to Maricruz, who regularly visits him in prison. In episode 3 of the first season, Michael convinces her to run away with him.
Fans loved this character
Fans immediately fell in love with Fernando Sucre, Fox River’s true good guy, optimistic, loyal and vulnerable inmate. He is also the one who aspires to a normal life when he gets out of prison. Willing to do anything for the love of his fiancée, Marisol, including taking great risks, he’s the one who tries his hardest not to get mad at anyone (which is why he’s allowed conjugal visits at the beginning of the series. That’s technically just busy).
Sucre is played by Amaury Nolasco, a Puerto Rican actor best known for his role in Prison Break. He was 35 years old in the first season and already had a little TV experience, having guest starred on ER, CSI, and CSI: Manhattan (another role he played on the main series). He was primarily known to Fast & Furious fans for his role as Orange Pilot Julius in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2002).
He was then hired on Prison Break, in which he played Sucre in 79 episodes from Season 1 Episode 1 to Season 5 Episode 8. In this last season,
Spoiler:
Sucre is “dumped” and works on a cargo ship, but still helps Michael and his friends get back to the United States.
what happened to him
During his escape from prison, Nolasco appeared in the films Revenge of the Losers (2006), Transformers, David Ayer’s End of the Night (2007), Max Payne with Mark Wahlberg (2008), and Armor with Matt Dillon (2009). He reappeared (in yet another new character!) in CSI: Miami and made the TV movie—what we then thought was the final one—Prison Break.
In the early 2010s, he was found in the credits of Rhum Express, Die Hard: Beautiful Day to Die and the sitcom Work It, in which his comedic talents, which were only slightly seen in Prison Break, were put to full use. Unfortunately, it only lasted one season and, unlike the rest of the Fox River cast, Nolasco struggled to land his first feature film role.
Cinema calls him again, for the crime – Spy in the Head with Kevin Costner (2016) and Speed Kills with John Travolta. After a small role in the 5th and final season of Prison Break in 2017, he reunited with Robert Knepper aka T-Bag for the thriller Edge of Fear.
Often confined to action movies (main: Law of Return (which eventually landed him a starring role) or Lights Out) we occasionally see Amore Nolasco in lighter productions like The Valet. He is still working today and by 2025 he has already made three films, but always in a secondary or even third role.
