If you enjoy American independent cinema, don’t miss this gem, the aptly named Good One!

17-year-old Sam prefers to spend the weekend with his friends, but he agrees to join his father Chris in the Catskills region of New York state. In paradise, where Chris’ lifelong friend Matt is unfortunately also invited.

If you like to discover new filmmakers, especially from American independent cinema, be tempted by Good One, India Donaldson’s first film. The feature film takes the form of an almost closed session between three characters, but with the peculiarity of being located in nature.

These two elements (in nature behind closed doors) are very reminiscent of an American film I noticed a few years ago: Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy. The work of this young filmmaker, India Donaldson, is very reminiscent of the work of Kelly Reichardt.

The film is simple and powerful, thanks to the power of the interactions between the characters.

In his note of intent, the director indicates: “I see this film as a shot; It depicts an intimate moment, a simple weekend in the woods, during which relationships are forever damaged. I grew up in a blended family of eight, so spending time with my dad was precious. My dad loves road trips, camping, and the outdoors, and I shared those passions with him, probably because they meant short periods of time when I had him all to myself. I loved our adventures and experienced the silent rituals at camp (setting up a tent or cooking over a wood fire) as bonding moments.

I wanted to show patience and let the rhythm of this conversation in the forest bring the characters to an emotional impact.

A slow tension builds and we are of course kept a secret as to what is gradually straining the exchange between the three characters. The film’s writing is careful, and the actors portray this exchange with great precision.

“I love movies that have a turning point. I also like stories that are reminiscent of the water that is heated at the beginning of the film and that gradually begins to boil. When this moment comes late in the film, the audience has had time to get to know the characters, to become attached to them. (…) I wanted to be patient and let the rhythm of this conversation in the forest bring the characters to the point of emotional impact“.
