The Grammys have always been known for nominating albums, songs, and even creating some dubious categories over the years. But this year they outdid themselves. “New Blue Sun,” André 3000’s album, received three nominations at the 2025 Grammys, including the coveted nomination for Album of the Year.
It will compete with giants like “Cowboy Carter,” by Beyoncé, “The Tortured Poets Department,” by Taylor Swift, and “Short n’ Sweet,” by Sabrina Carpenter. So far so good, if it weren’t for the fact that this album is experimental, instrumental and has the flute as a common thread.
Released in November 2023, “New Blue Sun” was also nominated for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Instrumental Composition for the track “I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Lerterally The Way The Wind Blew Me This” Time” – a title that sums up well how André has once again followed his artistic instinct.
When asked about his immediate reaction to the Album of the Year nomination, André expressed surprise: “We were trying to see if we could get into the alternative or ambient jazz categories. So when I saw the Album of the Year category, I was really surprised, because I didn’t think so many people knew about the album. I’m happy that the public paid attention.”
André also explained that, despite having presented the album throughout the year, many still did not fully understand the project. “When the album came out, a lot of people asked if it was real. We recently released a film about him on YouTube and a lot of people are only now hearing about it because of that. People associate the “flute album” with something classical, like Jethro Tull, but this is much more than a flute album. I think many, despite having heard about it, didn’t give the album a chance, perhaps because it was promoted without lyrics or verses.”
