The STF minister states that the action of the suicide bombers – defined by Bolsonaro as an “isolated incident” – is the result of the climate of extremism in the country. And he ruled out amnesty for the coup plotters: “Pacification only through the responsibility of criminals.” After Jair Bolsonaro defined the Praça dos Três Poderes attack as an “isolated event”, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), reacted by stating that the explosions are the result of the climate of extremism that has spread across the country during the former president’s tenure.
Speaking this Thursday morning (14/11) in a masterclass of the National Council of Public Prosecutors, Moraes said that the attack fits into a “context” that began with the “hate office” – a parallel structure that would have been created in the Bolsonaro government to spread lies and attacks against the former president’s opponents and enemies.
“What happened yesterday is not an event isolated from context,” Moraes said. “The context is a context that dates back to when the famous ‘hate office’ began to distill hate speeches against institutions; against the Federal Supreme Court, mainly; against the autonomy of the judiciary; against the ministers of the Supreme Court and the families of each minister.”
According to Moraes, the insults, threats and coercion have grown under the false pretext of freedom of expression. “Nowhere in the world does this freedom of expression exist. This is a crime. And this escalated and resulted in January 8.”
The minister praised the Public Prosecutor’s Office, saying that the institution carries out important work in the fight against extremism. “We must continue to fight this situation,” he appealed.
No amnesty
Moraes also stated that he does not believe in pacification of the country without punishing the criminals, a signal that should worry Bolsonaro himself and the supporters committed to amnesty those involved (civilians and military) in the coup attempt of January 8, 2023.
The former president, ineligible by FST decision until 2030 (in a separate trial, for abuse of power), also wants to pave the way for a candidacy in 2026.
The evening before, Bolsonaro had published a message on X inviting “all political currents and leaders of national institutions” to “national pacification” in favor of Brazil.
For Moraes, the “necessary pacification of the country” is only possible by “accounting for all criminals”.
“There is no possibility of pacification with amnesty for criminals,” the minister stressed. “Impunity will generate more attacks, as happened yesterday, because people think they can come to Brasilia, enter the STF to blow it up.”
Without mentioning Bolsonaro by name, Moraes said the attacks on democracy were “instigated by people, some of whom hold high positions in the Republic,” up to and including the use of bombs.
The investigation is expected to be led by Moraes
Moraes should take charge of the investigation into the attack carried out on Wednesday night (13/11) by Francisco Wanderley Luiz, 59, of Santa Catarina.
He died after lying on a bomb in Praça dos Três Poderes, in front of the STF. Despite causing other explosions, the action left no injuries. On social media the man showed signs of political radicalisation, threatening the STF and alleged “communists”.
The investigation is expected to be part of a larger investigation into coup acts carried out by Bolsonaro supporters in 2023, which is the responsibility of Moraes.
