In the qualifiers, in Lima, the teams show offensive ineffectiveness, remaining in the last places and on the verge of elimination
Peru and Chile give the impression that they will die embraced and eliminated in the South American qualifiers. This Friday (15/11), in the match that closed the eleventh round of the competition that gives six direct places to the World Cup, they drew. 0 to 0. They thus remain in the last two positions: the Peruvians with seven points and the Chileans with six. Venezuela, in 7th place, the position that starts the repechage, has 12 points.
But the score is deceiving. After all, both teams fought hard and had many chances. Peru, with less ball possession, almost scored on five occasions. At best, Guerrero missed the most scored goal of the match. Chile had at least seven. But the ball doesn’t go in.
Peru and Chile accumulate wasted opportunities
The first half was intense and full of scoring opportunities for both teams. Peru had its reference in Guerrero. The 40-year-old striker complained about a penalty at the start of the duel and had three more chances, the best of which was a ball that hit the post after Valera’s shot. Free, with the goal open and the goalkeeper beaten, the former Corinthians and Flamengo player caught the ball badly with his left leg and the ball went out. But it was Chile that had more ball possession (62%) and shots (9 to 6), four of which were net, with Aravena, Valdez (twice) and Vargas. In two of these the goalkeeper Cáceda performed a miracle.
In the second half Chile became more dangerous, with Vidal coming close to scoring with a shot from outside the area. But Peru was thrilled by the support of the fans and Advíncula, also from outside the area, forced goalkeeper Valdéz to score a point and send a corner. After ten minutes the match loses a bit of intensity, the opportunities become rarer, but it’s still there. With Chile a little more effective. However, the score remained blank.
VAR cancels the penalty for Peru
In the 50th minute Gareca makes the first two changes: he brings on Pavez and Mora. Two minutes later, Peru were on the attack. Lapadula receives the ball in the area and Mora, who hadn’t even touched the ball, knocks it down. Sorry. But the Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio, after the VAR analysis, confirmed Lapadula’s offside. Penalty canceled and match over.
The next round of qualifying will take place on Tuesday. Peru visits leader Argentina. Chile will have Venezuela, at home, in front of them.
