Coralie Fargeat criticized the statements made by the organizer of the Camerimage Film Festival
The film’s director THESubstance, Coralie Fargeatannounced that it is withdrawing the film from Camerimage Film Festivalin Poland, following controversial comments made by the event’s CEO about female cinematographers last week.
“After discovering the highly misogynistic and offensive words of the director of the Camerimage Film Festival, I decided to withdraw The Substance of the festival (and the [diretor de fotografia] Benjamin Kračun decided not to attend)”wrote Coralie on X (formerly Twitter), last Friday.
The Substance addresses exactly the impact of this type of behavior on our world. We must no longer tolerate them. We send our support to everyone involved in the festival and hope this decision contributes to much-needed change.
According to the The Hollywood Reporterthe founder and CEO of Camerimage, Marek Zydowiczsparked controversy when it published an editorial in response to requests for the festival to highlight more work by female directors. In his statement, Zydowicz suggested that such a move could go against the industry’s pursuit of artistic excellence.
“This evolution is crucial, as it corrects the evident injustice present in social development”wrote Zydowicz in the magazine Cinematography World. “However, this also raises a question: can the search for change exclude what is good? Can we sacrifice works and artists with exceptional artistic achievements just to make room for average productions?”
Supporting changes in the industry
The Substance directly addresses sexism and unfair beauty standards imposed on women in Hollywood. Criticism of the behavior portrayed in the film is reinforced by Coralie Fargeat’s boycott of the festival.
She is not the only one to adopt this stance: the director Steve McQueenfrom Blitzalso withdrew his film from the event, according to the THR.
A representative for Camerimage did not immediately respond to the company’s request for comment. Rolling Stone.
