Venezuela releases more prisoners held after election, rights group says

At least 60 people detained during protests against Venezuela’s disputed July presidential election have been released from prison, Foro Penal, a local human rights group, said on Saturday.

“Some political prisoners have been released since dawn,” said the group’s director, Alfredo Romero, in an article on X in the morning.

He said 10 people have so far been released from the prison known as Yare III, and an unknown number of other people from Las Crisalidas women’s prison have also been released. Subsequently, Romero posted on Instagram that 50 young people had been released from Tocoron prison.

A video he posted showed some of them walking along a highway outside the prison to cheers.

The expectation was that the number of prisoner releases would increase throughout the day.

The prosecutor’s office and the country’s Ministry of Communications did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to Foro Penal, at least 1,800 people have been arrested following the presidential elections on July 28, which kept Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in power despite hotly contested results.

Maduro took office in 2013 and is expected to begin his next six-year term in January.

The elections have sparked bloody anti-government protests, and the opposition, human rights groups and unions accuse the Maduro government of repressing dissent.
