From Claude Lelouch, we clearly remember The Man and the Woman (the Palme d’Or in 1966, before winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay the following year), Route of the Spoiled Child, A + One, The Ones and others, Adventure is Adventure, a wonderful story…
Needless to say, there’s no shortage of choices, as the director just released his 51st (and final?) feature this Wednesday, November 13th. While you wait to find out where he finally stands on the top rated movies list, do you know who is currently at the top?
With an average rating of 4 out of 5 from 670 ratings, La Bonne Année is the best of the Claude Lelouch movies. A Man and a Woman (3.9), preceded by Ones and Others, are Adventures of a Spoiled Child and Itinerary (3.7 all three), which are more easily cited when dealing with their author’s career.
And it is somewhat symbolic to see that it is the highest rated of his opus, at a time when Claude Lelouch uses certain images at the end to show that the hero played by Cad Merad is the child of the characters played by Lino Ventura and Françoise. Fabian in La Bonne Année. To connect the two eras of his cinema and remind us how much this feature film means to him?
Some excerpts from reviews by Internet users who rated La Bonne Année 4 out of 5 out of 5
Allen D.: “Faced with such delicate moments, we just have to bow down. We have to admit that the 3 main actors are just exceptional (some of the young actors who do this can take inspiration from them) – the supporting roles are definitely there. Give them a line and the guy behind the camera loves the actors as much , as I love chocolate.
Philip V50: “Everything is good about this film, Lelouch’s acting direction works wonders, Ventura’s extraordinary naturalness, as well as Françoise Fabian and Charles Gerard, Brilliant dialogues, a real lesson in cinema.”
Lino Massaro : “Wonderful! Lelouch creates a gentle, charming, fun film full of twists and turns because there’s still a heist! Ventura is exceptional (definitely one of his best roles). A very great French film!”

pilouBoulogne: “Lino Ventura plays a gangster who admires the elegance and culture of a beautiful antique dealer: Françoise Fabian. They meet, play, watch each other… Some passages are real excerpts from an anthology! In the end, even a great movie. Who is not a fan of Lelouch!”
Jim Bo Lebowski: “A big heist and love affair, Lelouch delivers a frenetic pace, brilliant staging and delicious dialogue in this character’s guise with a boss-sized Lino Ventura scheming at his side and trying to win over a woman who resists him.” A clash between Cannes banditry and the petty bourgeoisie that erupts over a memorable dinner party.”
“As for Man and Woman (self-quoted at the beginning of the film and during the exchange of film criticism), the side of the ambiguous melodrama touched me because it was well defined and knew how to end well. Without triviality, is not ready to forget Ventura’s last look full of truth.
Stanley Kubrick was a fan of this film, which he regularly showed his actors before filming
Bernard D.: “La Bonne Année” (1973) is a unique film in the work of Claude Lelouch, returning to a simple story of bandits, but of course a love story, the two stories intertwine very easily (…) a skilfully interpreted film on a script that holds the record well! Stanley Kubrick Being a fan of this film, he regularly showed it to his actors before filming.
Say ap Prale: “Francoise Fabian and Lino Ventura are great. Charles Gérard is always and forever a delight. Everything Lelouch has done with this film is incredibly modern. The dialogue and situations are juicy. A film to be discovered and rediscovered.”
