Norway announced on Sunday the donation of 670 million Norwegian kroner (about 60 million dollars) to the Amazon Fund, support which, according to the Norwegian government, would be linked to the reduction of deforestation in Brazil over the past year.
The announcement was made by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, during the global conference in Rio de Janeiro preceding the G20 leaders’ summit, according to statements by the Norwegian government and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES ), which manages the Fund.
“During the G20 summit, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere will have the opportunity to meet with the President of Brazil to reaffirm the long-standing cooperation between Norway and Brazil on issues related to climate change and rainforest protection,” he said Norway in a note.
In the statement, the Norwegian Prime Minister said that “preserving the Amazon forest is one of the most important measures in the world to address the impacts of climate change” and that the reduction of deforestation in Brazil during the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva “It is clear evidence of the ambition and ability of the Brazilian government to act under the leadership of President Lula.”
According to government data released earlier this month, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell 30.6% in the 12 months to July compared with the same period a year ago – the smallest area destroyed in the largest forest rainfall in the world in nine years.
The data, which is not measured according to the calendar year due to intense cloud cover during the rainy season between November and April, represents the first comprehensive annual measurement under the Lula government. Deforestation in the Amazon has fallen by nearly half since the last full year of Bolsonaro’s government.
