Director of films such as Wicked (2024), Filthy Rich (2018), Master Trick 2 (2016), She Dances, I Dance 2 (2008) and Justin Bieber’s Believe (2013), Jon M. Chu will be in charge of the biopic of Britney Spearsone of the biggest names in pop music, and revealed how the project is in its “initial conception.”
It is worth remembering how, in August 2024, Universal Pictures announced how it would adapt The woman in me (2023), memory book by Spearsto form the basis of a biography about the singer, responsible for hits such as “toxic,” “…Baby One More Time,” “Gimme More” and “Oops! …did it again.” Chu was also confirmed as production director.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporterthe filmmaker revealed that, although there is still no screenwriter attached to the biopic, they managed to reach an agreement on the general shape of the film about Britney Spears.
“In this initial conception, I think it has a lot to do with the way we treat people, young people, the stars we think are ours, women, mothers,” he stated. “I can’t say much about the history of Britney, unless I’m a fan of Britney many years ago.”
I saw her when she was one of the 12 artists on Shrine Auditorium. I’ve been to a lot of her shows and she’s always been someone I looked up to. She represents a generation of people who grew up in the 2000s and late 1990s, and has a story that deserves to be told properly. There’s a lot about us in this.
Right away, Jon M. Chu clarified a speech Spearswho hinted at working on a “fictional musical” with the director: “You’ll have to ask Britney What did she mean by all this? But she wrote my name on one of the [posts no] Instagram or Twitter.”
“This is an honor. I love it. I think she likes to tease the audience in different ways. So I’ll let that be a mystery on her part, but I’m excited to work with her,” he continued. Chu.
