Climate change increases the risk of fires in the Amazon

International events have placed sustainability at the center of global discussions, highlighting the urgency of coordinated actions to address the environmental crisis

Climate change has increased the risk of forest fires in the Amazon in 2023 by up to 20 times, report says. “State of fires 2023-2024” – Forest fire status 2023-2024, in Portuguese – on page 3.610. The data has been highlighted in debates at international meetings on the impact of the climate crisis.

Data Deforestation Alert System (SAD)from the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment, also report an increase in illegal logging as the second half of 2024 begins. The states of Amazonas, Pará and Acre are among the hardest hit, with deforestation rates of 28%, respectively 27% and 22%, for a total of 495 km² of devastated area.

In this scenario, the environmental issue is gaining importance in the main international forums, such as the G20, held in November 2024 in Rio de Janeiro. The group, made up of developed and emerging countries, is responsible for approximately 85% of global gross domestic product (GDP). The Amazon has also attracted special attention from political figures, such as US President Joe Biden, who is visiting Manaus ahead of the G20 summit.

For Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, founder and CEO of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), the issue of sustainability must be increasingly highlighted, especially at events that bring together leaders and influencers from different sectors.

“International events addressing the topic of sustainability are increasingly important, as they offer an essential platform for the exchange of ideas, practices and innovative solutions between leaders from different sectors. An example of this is the Quality Festival 2024, which takes place from 19 to 21 November in Manaus, bringing together experts, authorities and entrepreneurs to discuss how quality and sustainability can be integrated into global strategies. In a city strategically located in the heart of the Amazon, the event is proposed as a unique opportunity to strengthen the ‘commitment to the preservation of the environment,’ he concludes.
