The world’s largest supplier of enriched uranium, Russian state nuclear power company Rosatom, said on Monday that it would deliver uranium to all its customers as normal and that supplies to the United States could take place under a special regime, despite sanctions.
Russia announced on Friday that it had imposed temporary restrictions on the export of enriched uranium to the United States in response to US actions. Uranium prices increased following the decision.
In May, US President Joe Biden signed a law banning Russian enriched uranium, although the US can grant exemptions if there are supply problems.
“The decree banning the export of uranium products from Russia to the United States is an expected reciprocal response to the actions of the US authorities,” Rosatom said in a statement.
“The decree also establishes a special licensing regime that allows the supply of Russian uranium products to the United States and North American customers,” Rosatom added.
According to the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy, Russia holds about 44% of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity, and about a third of U.S. nuclear fuel imports came from Russia.
