Warning, this article contains spoilers for The Boys Season 3!
Evil, vicious, cruel, unstable… Superman, as powerful as he is evil from The Boys, brilliantly portrayed by Anthony Starr, is one of those pop culture villains we love to hate. In the 3rd season of the show, which recently ended on the Amazon platform, the character also has some flaws that prove that he remains human despite everything.
In the last episode in particular, Homelander discovers her son Ryan (Cameron Crovett), who she always wanted to have a relationship with, but who she pushed aside a bit until she discovered that this season’s Super, Soldier Boy, is her biological one. father The villain then envisions living a small family life with his parents and offspring, which Jensen Ackles’ character refuses to do.
And when Ryan is injured in the ensuing confrontation, Homelander doesn’t hesitate to drop everything to save him, proving he’s truly attached to the young lad. However, there is one thing about the super who hurt his son, but he killed the protester who did the same in cold blood!
And yet, it’s what happens at the end of the episode that proves the character remains a terrible person. This is also shown by the fact that he kills Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) after feeling betrayed by the man he considered his best friend.
Can such a monster redeem himself? It’s possible, but the boys then fall into the cliché of the villain whose mistakes are forgiven by other, more generous actions. This is something the series is already leaning toward for A-Train’s (Jessie T. Usher) character. So it would be a shame to offer rehabilitation arcs to all antagonists.
The opinion was shared by Antony Starr, who confided Collider On her character’s possible happy ending: “I think Homelander’s happy ending would be that he wipes everyone out and just sits in the bloody wasteland alone and nobody bothers him.“
And let’s continue:I don’t think it is a story of redemption of the motherland. I really don’t want to see that, to be honest. Nor do I think there is any intention to do so.“
On the other hand, the actor does not know how the villain’s story will end. “Every time I try to predict what might happen in the future, I get it wrong, so I stopped speculating. I’m like, you know what? I’ll leave that to the authors and save myself the embarrassment of being wrong, again and again and again.“, he concluded.
