Elvis Presley has a movie in Mexico that few people know about: the time he “was” in Acapulco

Austin Butler went from “iCarly” actor to “Elvis,” the biopic of the “King of Rock and Rock.” Although thanks to this film fans managed to learn some details of the singer’s private life, very few know that one of the strangest moments of his career had to do with Mexico.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. In 1955, when he was just 20 years old, he signed with the record label RCA and from that moment his overwhelming career began to take off. He is known worldwide for his hits such as ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’, ‘Suspicious Minds’ and ‘Hound Dog’.

Although the singer Elvis Presley never visited or performed in Mexico, one of his best films was recorded in Acapulco. How was this possible?

Elvis Presley: Know the movie he “recorded” in Mexico

1963 saw the release of the musical comedy Fun in Acapulco, where Elvis Presley played Mike Windgren, a professional trapeze artist who is afraid of heights due to a freak accident.

To make a living, Mike decides to work at a hotel in Acapulco as a pool lifeguard, hoping to overcome his phobia. What the protagonist didn’t know is that his intense singing and dancing would make many local girls fall in love.

According to ‘Imdb’, this movie was shot in two locations, the Villa Vera Spa & Resort Hotel in Acapulco and some studios in California. It was directed by Richard Thorpe and the cast included some stars like Ursula Andress, Elsa Cárdenas, Paul Lukas and Alejandro Rey.

Legend has it that Elvis Presley was never in Mexico for the filming of this movie, but that all of his scenes were shot at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Apparently, Mexican actress Katy Jurado helped the production adjust some of the sets to look like they were in Acapulco.

Supposedly, the director traveled to Acapulco to film the scenery and hotel shots, but when the protagonist needed to be in the frame, such as in the diving scene at La Quebrada, an Elvis lookalike was hired for the job.

The famous swimming sequence was filmed in the United States, as was the scene where Elvis Presley sings “Guadalajara”, accompanied by mariachi music.

There is no official explanation as to why Elvis Presley would not have gone to Mexico to film “Fun in Acapulco”, but some versions suggest that it was due to some Mexican politicians who did not look favorably on the “King of Rock and Roll” performance. .
