Unmotivated employees never perform well

Summary

Motivation in the workplace is discussed, highlighting that good working conditions, recognition and the use of OKRs are essential to keeping the team motivated.

Talking about ‘motivation’ in the workplace always generates discussions, after all people can feel motivated for different and unique reasons, the same goes when they start to feel demotivated. However, there are situations that are no longer acceptable as motivational factors and that owners, managers and leaders should completely reconsider before insisting on continuing to implement them.

And by “situations that are no longer acceptable” I am referring to the installation of some elements that I consider pure distraction and which, if analyzed coldly, add nothing to whether or not the employee is motivated. Be honest: do you think having a slide, a ping-pong table or even a video game are motivational factors? These elements seem more like a distraction than a motivation to me.

There are thousands of things you can offer to actually promote motivation, and the main one is: adequate working conditions. People want the work environment to be a place that enhances their well-being and provides all the tools necessary for them to correctly carry out their tasks to achieve the final result. Well, even though we say it over and over again, it seems we still don’t believe that unmotivated employees don’t perform well.

According to data provided by Gallup, an opinion research company in the United States, approximately 61% of workers do not feel engaged in their work. Furthermore, the study by the management consultancy firm Bain & Company states that a demotivated employee can be 125% less productive than one who feels engaged and inspired.

So the burning question: how to keep the team motivated? OKRs – Objectives and Key Results – can help a lot, as they prioritize people in different areas and no, it’s not about hugging trees. By getting employees involved in processes and letting them know how they are impacting the company, OKRs encourage the exploration of existing potential, inevitably making them more productive.

On top of this, the tool offers greater clarity and focus, which will allow team members to see what needs to be done and what possibly needs to be improved, keeping everyone on the same page. This leads to an improvement in the climate of the organization, as employees now have the autonomy to give ideas and even make decisions, doing good teamwork and being in tune with the leaders.

The truth is that in addition to the good working conditions that must be offered, the real motivation is linked to the recognition of employees by the leadership, which, from the moment it begins to see those people and encourage them to grow, sees a change in behavior. After all, we all want to be recognized for what we do, receiving positive rewards for performing well.

Do you want to see better results in your organization, more satisfied and happy people? The answer is simple: start by organizing your management system.
