Over the four seasons of Stranger Things, the show’s mythology has grown substantially. From Demogorgon, the main antagonist of season 1, to Vecna in season 4, a lot has happened! And all these strange events were accompanied by explanations. So it’s time to evaluate all the terms specific to Stranger Things.
upside down
Let’s start from the beginning. The Upside Down is an alternate dimension that exists alongside Hawkins’ universe, also called the Upside Down in French. The dimension originally consisted entirely of rolling mountains and floating rocks and was home to a race of humanoid predators.
Somehow, the Upside Down transformed from its original state into a perfect replica of the human world, exactly as it existed on November 6, 1983. However, unlike World Man, this new incarnation of the Upside Down is covered in alien vines. spores and membranes and it is completely devoid of human life.
portals
Portals or gates in English look like gashes and are actually ruptures in the fabric of space-time and reality that binds the human world upside down. They serve as bridges between dimensions, allowing anyone to travel between worlds instantly.
Eleven, Vecna, and Demogorgon all possess the ability to create portals. Additionally, these portals can be considered extensions of the Upside Down, as they are made from the same vines and other components found throughout the dimension.
Mothergate
Also known as the “Rift”, the Mothergate is a portal to the Upside Down located in an underground section of Hawkins National Laboratory. The Mothergate was inadvertently opened by Eleven on November 6, 1983. He was guided by Dr. Brenner to make psychic contact with the Demogorgon, an action that tore apart the fabric of reality, creating a rift in the wall that connected the Upside Down.
Demogorgons
These are the first upside-down creatures we encounter in the series. They are terrible local predators. Everyone you’ve met so far is believed to obey the Mind Flayer and is a part of his mind. Under its influence, Demogorgons are murderous, violent, and of limited intelligence.
Demodogs
They are demogorgon variants. Instead of having a humanoid body, they instead have a dog-like body. Dustin liked one of them as a “Baby Demodog”, but it was clearly not a good idea.
Debots
These nasty little creatures are upside down bats with razor sharp teeth. They appear in the fourth season and are mainly associated with Vecna. They are also directly related to his mind and will.
Vine
Vine Or in English Vines, also called vines, are one of the dominant life forms upright. And they are all connected through Hivemind. A vine is a life form that falls somewhere between the traditional idea of ”plant” and “animal.” They are a real threat to those who are bound by them.
Hivemind
The extraterrestrial vines, along with the demogorgons and demobats, form a kind of vessel mind that can be thought of as a collective intelligence. This shared psychic connection is made possible through the Mind Flayer.
Mind Flayer
Mind Flayer Or Mind Flayer is French for unit upside down. When discovered, it is a giant creature that spans at least 50 stories and has the appearance of a giant spider. He seems to have control over all the upsides through a psychic link with all other beings.
In Season 4, Episode 9, we learned that it was originally just a huge cloud of particles. It was Henry Creel, aka One aka Vecna, who gave him his spider form when he discovered the upside down.
Mind Lair
It is an imaginary place that exists in Vecna’s mind. By throwing her curse, Vekna can hallucinate her victims and enter their minds. We had several visions of him. First with Max, who managed to escape thanks to Kate Bush’s song in episode 4. Then to Nancy, who foreshadowed Hawkins’ future destruction before he was released. When in the Mind Lair, Vekna is vulnerable as she is in a trance-like state, flying upside down in the attic of her childhood home.
Empty
Empty There is a visual representation of Eleven’s mind when she uses the technique of astral projection, where she uses extrasensory perception to place other people or beings in different locations.
