Buenos Aires spoke of “sending armed troops” and “closing the streets” around the diplomatic headquarters in Caracas, where six members of the Venezuelan opposition are taking refuge, under the protection of the Argentine government and members of the opposition to the Nicolás dictatorship Maduro said on Saturday (23/11) that agents have once again surrounded the Argentine embassy in Caracas, where six opponents are taking refuge.
“The Republic of Argentina condemns the acts of harassment and intimidation against asylum seekers at the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, currently under the diplomatic protection of the Government of Brazil,” the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement published on X.
Javier Milei’s government said that “the sending of armed troops”, the “closure of the streets” around the Argentine embassy in the Venezuelan capital and “other maneuvers constitute a security disturbance that must be guaranteed to the diplomatic headquarters in accordance with international law, as well as those who have requested diplomatic asylum”.
In its statement, Argentina “turns to the international community to condemn these practices and demand the necessary safe conduct to allow the departure” from the country of the six opposition refugees who have taken refuge in the diplomatic headquarters since last March, after the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor accused of several crimes, including criminal conspiracy and treason.
The statement also thanks the Brazilian government for “representing Argentina’s interests in Venezuela, assuming the protection of diplomatic structures, and for its efforts to ensure the safety of asylum seekers in the face of harassment by the Venezuelan regime.”
Third episode of the siege
Pedro Urruchurtu, one of the asylum seekers and international coordinator of Vente Venezuela (VV), a party led by María Corina Machado, stated, in a publication in tactical actions (DAET) of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) “surround the diplomatic headquarters and block access to the road”.
This is the third siege reported by Urruchurtu outside the Argentine residence, whose protection was assumed last August by Brazil, after the expulsion of Argentine diplomats from Venezuela in the same month.
In addition to Urruchurtu, Magalli Meda, head of the presidential campaign, Claudia Macero, communications coordinator of the VV, Omar González, former deputy, Humberto Villalobos, electoral coordinator of the Campaign Command of the VV, and former minister Fernando Martínez Mottola, advisor to the democratic opposition. Unitary Platform (PUD).
Four months have passed since the Chavista regime declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the last elections, despite accusations of fraud.
Unlike what happened in other elections, the electoral authorities did not publish the voting minutes, which would allow the result to be verified.
The opposition claims to have won, based on ballots collected independently by more than 80% of electronic voting machines and published on the Internet.
Since then, Venezuelan authorities have committed widespread human rights violations against protesters, opposition leaders and critics of the electoral process. There have been at least 25 deaths among regime opponents this year, according to organizations monitoring the situation.
