In the new Netflix movie “Hidden Agent”, Ryan Gosling’s character jokes that he is called Six because 007 was taken.
The film is an effects-rich, high-budget thriller in the spirit of a James Bond adventure. Netflix and the directors are hoping the film, which will stream on Friday, will launch a long-running spy series for the company.
Gosling plays Sierra Six, a former prisoner who was released from prison by the CIA in exchange for serving on a secret program.
“I’ve always wanted to do an action movie,” Gosling told Reuters. “Action was my first love. It made me fall in love with movies in the first place. It took a minute to get there and find the right one.”
“Hidden Agent” is based on a work by Mark Greaney and directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers who directed Marvel’s smash hit “Avengers: Endgame”.
The Russos said Netflix allowed them to bring their full vision to the screen. “Hidden Agent” was filmed in seven locations around the world, from Azerbaijan to Croatia and France.
“We wanted to be very ambitious with this film,” said Anthony Russo. “It’s hard to shoot the action. It’s expensive to shoot the action and Netflix was prepared for that level of ambition.”
The film contains nine major action sequences, including a long shootout in a public square in Prague.
Chris Evans plays Gosling’s nemesis, an assassin named Lloyd Hansen who was expelled from the CIA for excessive tactics.
“Hidden Agent” will air exclusively in theaters this week before coming to Netflix.
