Flamengo Stadium Project –

About the Flamengo stadium

The ‘birth’ of the Flamengo stadium is a ten-year project of the club. In this way, Flamengo managed to purchase a plot of land of 86,592 m² for R$138,195,000, the minimum value established by the Municipality in the expropriation notice of the site. The space is located in the São Cristóvão neighborhood, in the Gasometro region, a few meters from the Center.

Therefore the region will have to accommodate four stadiums in a small radius. After all, it is 3.5 km from the land purchased by Flamengo in São Januário, from Vasco. São Cristóvão’s Ronaldo Luiz Nazário de Lima Stadium is 1.5 km away. Maracanã is just 4 km away.

Flamengo presented the project for the construction of its stadium on Friday evening (22nd). The presentation is the result of a preliminary study, which includes the basis of the project, with more details on the stadium. The club estimates a total investment of R$1.93 billion, with all expenses expected, from land to landscaping. The inauguration is scheduled for November 15, 2029, the club’s anniversary.

Start of work?

Flamengo designed its stadium to be taller than the Maracanã and Santiago Bernabéu, with a height of 60 metres, equivalent to a 20-storey building. Furthermore, there will be 16 access ramps to the structure. The works, in fact, should only begin at the beginning of 2026, while next year should be reserved for more bureaucracy.

One of the strong points of the project is the pressure that the stadium intends to create on the opponents. The space between the stands and the pitch will be one of the smallest in Brazil. Furthermore, the club’s studies indicate that the acoustics of the north stand, intended for Flamengo fans, will reach the pitch with 16 decibels more than normal.

The stadium should have a capacity of just over 77 thousand people (the Maracanã holds 78 thousand). There is also a plan for a large screen outside where fans can gather.

To raise funds, Rubro-Negro plans to raise more than R$2 billion in stadium-related revenue. Among these are R$1.5 billion in naming rights, the sale of one thousand perpetual chairs, five thousand chairs for five years and boxes for twenty years.
