A rare copy of the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, JK Rowling’s debut novel, published in 1997, was sold for 36 thousand pounds (275 thousand R$ at current price) at auction held in Lichfield, UK on Wednesday 27th. According to Hansons Auctioneers, the book is one of 500 hardback copies printed during the first print run in 1997.

The work was purchased 30 years ago for just 10 pounds (R$76) by Englishwoman Christine McCulloch, as a gift for her son Adam. “We entered [na livraria] and we bought it for £10. Adam really loved the book and started to feel this kind of fascination, like so many children around the world,” Christine told the BBC.
The McCulloch family only became aware of the book’s potential value during the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19, in 2020, after seeing the reports on the first editions.
The book, which was stored in a cupboard under the stairs of the family home, was assessed by experts. Despite having “some tea stains”, the copy was in good condition.
“In a way, I think I have a bit of history going around [do exemplar]a few tea stains there and a folded corner here, where someone enjoyed reading, adds magic [do enredo]” McCulloch’s son, Adam, told the network.
