In 2019, David Leitch (John Wick) presented Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off of the saga centered on the characters of Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs) and Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw). In this spinoff film, Hobbs and Shaw are forced to work together to stop Brixton (Idris Elba), a genetically modified anarchist who has gotten his hands on a weapon of mass destruction.
With a budget of $200 million, this action film earned $760 million at the worldwide box office. Despite the fact that the results did not fully meet the expectations of the manufacturers, these figures still remain respectable. A sequel was soon announced, but the Covid-19 pandemic halted the project. Since then, the franchise, which has grossed more than $7 billion at the global box office, has taken a new direction.
The tension between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson
Recall that after the completion of Fast & Furious 8, Dwayne Johnson decided to leave the main saga due to disagreements with Vin Diesel. However, Luke Hobbs’ interpreter was to continue in the spin-off films.
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are still joining the cast of Louis Leterrier’s Fast, despite their absence from August 2021’s Fast & Furious 9.
This return of Dwayne Johnson alarmed many fans, convinced them that a Superpolis return was impossible… and caused chaos within the studio. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson finally put their differences aside (although they don’t share scenes in Fast X) to end the saga.

“Reuniting This Beautiful Brotherhood”
In June 2023, Rock also announced that he had put the past behind him and made it clear :”Despite our differences, we have been like brothers for years. As a brotherhood, we will guarantee this franchise and always take care of it, be it the characters or the fans. I have always built my career by thinking about what the audience wanted first and that will continue under my leadership. “
Vin Diesel, meanwhile, recently shared a photo of him and Dwayne Johnson on the set of Fast & Furious 5 on his Instagram account, along with the following message:

Universal tells me in one ear that FastX2 is needed by March 2026! In another, Comcast insists on making two movies to end the saga! Then the writer of Fast Five sent me this picture and said we got to see Dom and Hobbes make out. Their differences I just want to get back to real street racing, practical stunts… and the return of this beautiful brotherhood.
Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are set to reunite in Fast & Furious 11, which is set to begin shooting in the first quarter of 2025 for a release date slated for March 2026, if Diesel’s post is to be believed.
What about a Hobbs & Shaw spin-off?
What about the planned saga spin-offs with Luke Hobbs? FYI, in addition to the sequel to Hobbs & Shaw, a film focusing on the conflict between Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Dante Reiss (Jason Momoa), which takes place after the events of Fast (but has not yet begun filming), as well as a standalone film focusing on Only about Dwayne Johnson’s character.
Saga screenwriter Chris Morgan recently spoke about the sequel to the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, Mic. The Hollywood Reporter. And it seems that he is as lost as the audience in front of these (too) many projects.

Hobbs and Shaw
“That’s really something the studio needs to talk about. We’ll discuss what happens, when and how, but I’ll leave that to a clearer mind than mine. The screenwriter added that he is currently working on a script for a Hobbs & Shaw-type project, without giving further details. We don’t know if this is one of those spin-offs or a movie in its own right. “It’s locked in. I can say I’m working on a Hobbs & Shaw type of script. We’ll see where it goes, but I’m very excited about it.”
Statements that don’t really help us understand more about the future of the Fast & Furious franchise and its spin-offs, especially since Vin Diesel In his message, he suggests that the last part of the franchise could eventually be divided into two new parts, as he already said in May 2023. The actor and producer have gone back on their statements, but things still seem unclear.
Fast & Furious 11 will start shooting soon, new information will be revealed soon. Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson is currently decked out in a wig and leaf outfit on the set of the live-action adaptation of Moana, in which he reprises his role as the demigod Maui.
