Glorioso played with less for more than 100 minutes and won the title
Botafogo concluded their epic campaign in the Libertadores with their first title in the competition. After seventeen matches in nine months, Glorioso managed to overcome the latest adversity and beat Atlético-MG 3-1.
One of the final hurdles to overcome was having to play another 100 minutes with one less player, after Gregore was sent off just 35 seconds into the match. After that, he was smart to take advantage of his chances to win the match.
The epic adventure began on February 21st against Aurora, in Cochabamba, in the second phase of the Pre-Libertadores. Since then, Alvinegro has overcome all the adversities that came her way to continue in the competition and reach the big decision.
The bet and Artur Jorge’s goal in eight minutes
Even after the expulsion, Artur Jorge chose not to change teams and to put a midfielder in place of a player from the attacking quartet. As a result, Marlon Freitas took a more defensive position and Savarino dropped back and played a more central role in the area, helping in marking and responsible for escapes from the attack.
Furthermore, Luiz Henrique and Almada also went to the defense and took up a central position in the center of defense. Alvinegro congested the midfield, blocked Galo and forced his rival to cross into the area. However, he was not in great danger.
John was forced to make only two submissions, both involving Hulk submissions from distance. As time passed, Alvinegro managed to explore spaces and opened the scoring with an action started from the left. Luiz Henrique and Almada find themselves on the same side of the pitch, and the number 7 takes advantage of the ball hit by the Argentine and opens the scoring.

After the goal, Atlético intensifies the pressure with crosses, but is unable to run any major dangers and leaves ample space for the Juventus counterattack. Eight minutes after opening the scoring, Glorioso was awarded a penalty after Luiz Henrique outpaced Arana and was brought down by Éverson in the area. Charging in, Alex Telles hits hard, wrong-footing the Atletico goalkeeper and widening.
Excellent defensive performance and top scorer
In the second half, Gabriel Milito changed teams, making Atlético more offensive and Galo improved the game. The Minas Gerais team declined after Eduardo Vargas took advantage of a corner kick from Hulk.
From then on Galo felt the final pressure and Alvinegro defended himself very well. John made a great save on Hulk’s submission, while Eduardo Vargas, Deyverson and Alan Kardec kicked wide.
On the last play of the match, a very important player of the season scored the title-winning goal. The competition’s top scorer, Júnior Santos, took advantage of John’s throw, made a great play to the side and took advantage of the ball hit by the defense to confirm the unprecedented title.
The title caps the nine-month journey of a team that has overcome all the challenges presented by the competition. Botafogo overcame coaching changes, two defeats in their first two group stage matches, clubs who had already won the competition and a hostile atmosphere in Uruguay. The Glorious One was worthy of Eternal Glory.
