The United Nations General Assembly approved last Tuesday (3) a resolution calling for an international conference to discuss the creation of a Palestinian state in June 2025.
The initiative to try to pave the way for a two-state solution received 157 votes in favor, including Brazil, and eight against (Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and the United States), in addition to 7 abstentions (Cameroon, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Paraguay, Ukraine and Uruguay).
The UN expressed “unwavering support, in accordance with international law, for the two-state solution of Israel and Palestine” and insisted on the need to initiate “credible negotiations” for the Middle East peace process.
According to the document, the Assembly decided to convene a “high-level international conference for the peaceful settlement of the Middle East and the implementation of the two-state solution”, which will be co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
Until then, the text calls on the parties to “act responsibly” to reverse “negative trends, including all measures taken on the ground that violate international law”.
More specifically, the Assembly once again calls for the realization of “the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, first and foremost the right to self-determination and the right to create an independent state.”
Based on recent decisions by the International Court of Justice, the UN also demands that Israel “end its illicit presence in the occupied Palestinian territories as quickly as possible” and cease all colonization.
Finally, the text still supports a global ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Since the start of the conflict in the Palestinian enclave in October 2023, the death toll has exceeded 44,000 and most of the local population has been forced to leave their homes. .
