Policy to combat gender and racial political violence in Porto Alegre approved


“Choosing March 14 as the end of this week honors the memory of Marielle Franco, whose unsolved murder became an international symbol against political and gender-based violence. We are encouraging the creation of evidence-based laws, with the aim to catalyze changes in local realities and encourage the implementation of concrete actions”, underline the parliamentarians.

The City Council of Porto Alegre, in the plenary session this Wednesday (04/12), approved a bill that establishes the Municipal Policy to Combat Gender and Race Political Violence and includes in the annex the Municipal Week anniversary of Fight against political violence based on gender and race. of Law no. 10.904 of 31 May 2010 – Calendar of commemorative dates and awareness raising in the Municipality of Porto Alegre – from 8 to 14 March. The proposal is signed by councilors Biga Pereira (PCdoB), Cláudia Araújo (PSD) and Karen Santos (PSOL).




The guidelines established by the aforementioned Policy are the guarantee of women’s rights and the promotion of political participation, prohibiting discrimination and unequal treatment due to gender, race or ethnicity in access to political representation bodies and in the exercise of public functions; the open confrontation with behaviors specifically directed against women who have the power to embarrass, discourage, prevent or limit access to institutional political spaces, both in the electoral process and during the exercise of their mandate; address any situation in the political environment that encourages or tolerates discrimination against women or in relation to their colour, race or ethnicity; among others.

The project’s explanatory memorandum highlights that the Municipal Week to Combat Gender and Racial Political Violence begins on International Women’s Day, a globally recognized date for the struggle and achievements of women throughout history. For the authors of the proposal, this period symbolizes not only the celebration of these victories, but also the memory of the persistent challenges faced by women in our society.
