Biden: “The Assad regime is finally over”

Joe BidenThe president of the United States has made his first public statement since the flight of dictator Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power in Syria for 24 years. This Sunday, 8, he commented on the conquest of Damascus by the HTS rebel forces, commanded by Mohammed al-Golani.

“The Assad regime is finally over. This is a time of risk and uncertainty. The United States will work with partners and stakeholders to help them seize this opportunity.”Biden said.

Bashar al-Assad has reportedly left Syria, seeking asylum in Russia with his family. Russia, in turn, announced that Assad had given instructions for a peaceful transition of power. This shift in power in Syria signals possible reconfigurations in the regional alliances and strategic interests of several countries.

Besides Biden, how is the West reacting to the fall of Assad?

The United States, under the leadership of then-President Joe Biden, remains vigilant about ongoing events in Syria. Biden has expressed criticism of Assad’s former allies, including Russia, Iran and Hezbollah. The US administration still faces the challenge of addressing the issue of the American journalist Austin Ticemissing in Syria for more than a decade.

France, however, celebrated the fall of the Assad regime. The French government expressed its satisfaction, underlining the end of a period of repression and violence against the Syrian people. The president Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to peace and security in the region, celebrating the resilience of Syrians.

Israel remains cautious in the face of changes in Syria, focusing its attention on protecting the Golan Heights region. Despite internal instability in Syria, Israel maintains a policy of non-interference in internal conflicts, but reaffirms its right to defend its borders. In Iran the situation worsened with the news that the Iranian embassy in Damascus had been invaded by armed groups. This event highlighted the fragility of security in the Syrian capital and raised concerns about the influence of extremist groups on local decisions.

What are the implications for Syria’s domestic and foreign policies?

The peaceful transition of power in Syria is seen by the Russian government as a strategic move to stabilize the region. Therefore, Russia positions itself as a crucial player in Syria’s political future, seeking to broker an orderly and negotiated exit from the crisis.

On the other hand, Turkey’s position, through the statements of its leaders, suggests that the Syrian government could have exploited previous opportunities for reconciliation with its population, aiming to build a new national consensus.

Brazil, through Itamaraty, maintains close monitoring of the situation in Syria. The Brazilian government urges all parties to respect international law and United Nations resolutions, promoting a negotiated political solution that takes into account Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
