Investor confidence in the Eurozone falls to its lowest level in more than a year in December

Investor confidence in the euro zone fell in December to its lowest level in more than a year, a survey showed on Monday, with Germany remaining a flashpoint for the bloc as early elections in February fail.

The Sentix index for the euro zone fell to -17.5 in December from -12.8 in November, the lowest level since November 2023 and a bigger decline than forecasts of -13.5 made by analysts polled by Reuters .

“After the announcement of new elections for the German Bundestag there is no more optimism,” the survey says, adding that as far as Europe’s largest economy is concerned, “recession remains omnipresent.”

The survey of 1,148 investors, conducted Dec. 5-7, showed that expectations also fell to -5.8 in December, from -3.8 points last month.

The monetary union’s current state of affairs score fell to its lowest level in more than two years, reaching -28.5 in December, compared to -21.5 in November.

According to the survey, investor confidence in Germany also fell to -33.2 in December, from -29.8 in November.
