According to the medical bulletin, the president is “doing well, under monitoring in an intensive care bed” after undergoing brain surgery to treat a hematoma.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva underwent surgery on Monday night (9/12) in Sao Paulo, after experiencing headaches and undergoing an MRI. The information comes from the Sírio-Libanês hospital, which released a medical bulletin on the president’s state of health.
According to the medical bulletin released on Tuesday (12/10), the president “is well, under monitoring in an intensive care bed”.
“President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was yesterday evening (12/9) at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital, Brasilia unit, to undergo an x-ray examination after feeling a headache. The MRI showed a intracranial hemorrhage, consequence of the domestic accident suffered in 10/19”, reads the medical bulletin.
Lula was then sent to Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo.
The operation Lula underwent was a craniotomy to drain a hematoma.
A craniotomy is a surgery in which a part of the skull is temporarily removed so that the brain can be accessed. It can be done for a variety of reasons, such as to treat brain tumors.
But in the president’s case, the goal was to drain fluid from a bruised brain.
Lula had suffered a head contusion following a domestic accident in October, in which he hit his head. According to information released in the press at the time, Lula had had an accident in the bathroom while he was sitting on a bench and making final preparations for a trip to Russia. He reportedly fell backwards and hit his head.
The medical bulletin from the Sírio-Libanês Hospital this Tuesday says that the surgery took place without problems.
“The updated medical bulletin will be issued in the morning. A press conference will also be held in the morning”, informs the hospital.
Lula is being treated by doctors Roberto Kalil Filho and Ana Helena Germoglio.
What is “brain bruise”
In general, the term hematoma refers to an accumulation of blood, mostly coagulated, that occurs in some part of the body.
“A hematoma is usually caused by a ruptured blood vessel that has been damaged by surgery or injury,” explains the U.S. National Cancer Institute website.
“It can occur anywhere on the body, including the brain. Most bruises are small and go away on their own, but some may need to be removed with surgery,” the text adds.
At the time of Lula’s accident, Kalil Filho explained that the president’s condition required repeating tests during the week, which is normal for cases of this type and which allows one to check how the injury has progressed and whether a intervention or treatment. .
“A possible cerebral hemorrhage may increase in the following days. Observation is therefore important”, underlined the doctor.
What is craniotomy
A craniotomy is the removal of part of the skull for brain surgery. According to the Mayo Clinic website, a craniotomy may be performed to collect a sample of brain tissue or to treat conditions or injuries that affect the brain.
The procedure is used to treat brain tumors, brain hemorrhages, blood clots, or seizures. It may also be done to treat a bulging blood vessel in the brain, known as a cerebral aneurysm.
A craniotomy can treat blood vessels that have formed irregularly, known as a vascular malformation. If an injury or stroke has caused swelling in the brain, a craniotomy may be performed to relieve pressure on the brain.
The risks of craniotomy depend on the patient’s specific circumstances, but according to the Mayo Clinic, “rarely can a craniotomy lead to coma or death.”
Surgeries like this can require four to six days of hospitalization and weeks for a full recovery.
