The director and producer adjusts his deal with the studio after lower-than-expected results

JJ Abramsdirector and producer behind hits like Lost and Felicityrenewed his contract with Warner Bros.but on more modest terms than those stipulated in his initial 2019 agreement. At the time, Abrams signed a $500 million contract, which included ambitious goals to transform his production company, BadRobotin a creative center for cinema and television. However, five years later, the studio revised the terms due to lower-than-expected results.

The original contract allowed Abrams to not only create projects but also sign deals with other promising screenwriters, positioning Bad Robot as a “mini-studio” within Warner Bros. Despite this, many announced projects were canceled or faced delays. Among them, the science fiction series Demimondewith a budget of more than $200 million, was scrapped before production. Other series, such as Overlook (spin-off of The Shining) and Madame X (based on a DC character), did not move forward, and Little Voice was canceled after one season.

Furthermore, the film project of a Superman with a black actor, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by Abrams, remains in development without significant progress as of 2023. The crime series Dusterapproved in 2020, should only debut in 2025.

These problems meant that Bad Robot did not reach the benchmarks financial and production costs stipulated in the original contract, reducing the final value of the agreement by half. At a time when the industry is facing cuts driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and strikes by writers and actors in 2023, million-dollar contracts are being reevaluated. Executives like David Zaslavfrom Warner Bros. Discovery, prioritize cost reduction to meet shareholder demands and reduce debt.

Among the upcoming releases of BadRobot is the film Flowervale Streetwith Anne Hathawayscheduled for March 2025.
