Mattarella spoke about wars and green transition in the message
The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, praised this Friday (13) the free trade agreement announced by Mercosur and the European Union, after 25 years of negotiations, underlining that the treaty is a “vehicle of peace”.
“The overcoming of fragmentation and a profound international dialectic, between the different groups of interested countries, are the very vehicles of peace. Even more so when they know how to unite the future of entire continents – as in the case of the recent agreement between the Europe and Mercosur”, he said while greeting the diplomatic corps.
Mattarella emphasized the protection of “common goods”, such as biodiversity, food security and the general health of the planet.
In his statement, the Italian leader also reiterated the need to urgently accelerate the energy transition and for there to be “common and rapid efforts to overcome the gap between decarbonisation ambitions and implementation capacity as quickly as possible”.
Additionally, global crises are said to have increased last year, with 56 ongoing conflicts reported amid widespread deterioration in security conditions.
The President of Italy also reiterated that the country’s support for Ukraine remains firm and determined and aims for a just peace, based on the principles and values of the United Nations Charter.
He recalled the commitment to host the third edition of the International Conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in Rome in July next year.
Finally, Mattarella commented on the crisis in Syria, after the rebels overthrew the regime of dictator Bashar al-Assad. “It is essential that a new state is created quickly, that in these agitated phases dialogue is reactivated, the population and minorities are protected” he concluded. .
