Fuvest: 5 episodes on the topic of editorial staff

With different characteristics from Enem, the USP test has a more ‘philosophical’ character and enhances the originality of the text

It is possible to distinguish the Fuvest other entrance exams in different aspects and one of them is writing. In the test to insert the University of Sao Paulo (USP)the topic of the essay is usually “more philosophical and complete”, explains Redação Nota 1000’s pedagogical consultant, Heloisa Guimarães. Therefore, the suggestions on the topics to analyze for the test are different from those designed for Enem, for example.

Another element that differentiates Fuvest is the evaluation in relation to the originality of the text, that is, the student’s ability to construct an authentic argument, based on the insertion of new ideas that continue the discussions started by the collection, explains Guimarães.

The tests of the second phase of Fuvest 2025, the main access to university courses of the University of São Paulo (USP), will take place on Sunday 1st and Monday 16th in 23 cities of the State of São Paulo.

Professor Vinicius Beltrão, coordinator of teaching and innovation at SAS Educação, adds that while Enem usually brings a social approach to Brazil, without controversy, Fuvest proposes “more delicate and sensitive” themes, which had visibility during the year.

Candidates are recommended to make their vision of the topic covered in the essay very clear, ensuring consistency in the organization of arguments so that appropriate conclusions on the topic can be reached. It also draws attention to avoid contradictions and reminds that, unlike Enem, at Fuvest it is not necessarily necessary to draw up an intervention proposal.

How to do the entrance exam essay well? Estadão’s “POV da Lousa” series offers advice for students to avoid making common mistakes, such as straying from the topic, being “exempt,” and skipping revision. Another recommendation from Carol Jesper (@portugueselegal) is not to worry about the title before writing the text. #PovdaLousa #education #entrance exam

Some topics that can be studied in depth for the Fuvest 2024 essay are:

Social networks in the spread of fake news and hate speech

Since the 2018 presidential elections, the role of social networks in communication and opinion formation has become increasingly evident, especially in relation to political and social contexts. “In this sense, discussing the power of social networks currently involves thinking about how networks can create information bubbles, influence elections and promote or combat disinformation and hate speech,” explains the pedagogical consultant.

“Fuvest may want to evaluate the candidate’s ability to reflect on the social, political and ethical implications of this phenomenon,” he adds.

How to control entrance exam anxiety? The Estadão ‘POV da Lousa’ series offers advice for those who will have to face the second phase of the main entrance exams in Brazil. The first advice from Lucas Moreno (@moleculando) is to take a deep breath and clear the air to calm nervousness. It’s also important to focus on this final stretch and focus on what you’ve already mastered to gain confidence. Another tip is to arrive at the test location early. #PovdaLousa #education #entrance exam

The progress of artificial intelligence and its ethical and social impacts in the contemporary world

Current challenges, artificial intelligence and automation are rapidly transforming different aspects of daily life, raising questions about the future of work, economic, cultural and philosophical impacts and privacy, especially regarding the use of personal data. There are still questions related to the ethics and control of this tool.

Discussing the global impact of artificial intelligence is also essential to avoid the creation of a “technology gap” between developed and developing countries, Guimarães points out.

“Fuvest could ask the student to reflect on the need for regulation of AI, to take a stand on the question of authorship of AI-created media and arts, or even to focus the thesis on its impact on everyday life as a whole,” he says.

Boredom and anesthesia in modernity

“We live in an era marked by technologies that promise constant access to information and entertainment. But this intense flow of stimuli can generate a feeling of ‘anesthesia,’ in which people become increasingly numb to everyday experiences,” says Guimaraes.

Boredom can be seen not just as an individual feeling, but as a collective symptom, reflecting the difficulty of finding meaning in routine activities or in a life saturated with superficial stimuli, he explains. This issue is directly linked to the challenges faced by modern society, such as the addiction to social networks, the constant search for immediate gratification and the impact of these dynamics on the capacity for attention and deep reflection.

The topic also opens space for discussion on the excessive consumption of cultural products and digital media, leading to a reflection on how these factors can influence people’s emotional and social health.

Mental health: between pathologization and trivialization of self-diagnosis

Mental health has become increasingly important in society, especially among younger people. Despite being fundamental, the debate on mental health is fundamental and involves complexities, says the pedagogical consultant, such as the trivialization of self-diagnosis, driven by the widespread dissemination of information on the Internet on social networks such as X and TikTok. “Networks have generated a culture in which anyone feels entitled to diagnose their own mental health, often without the guidance of a qualified professional,” he points out.

This practice can lead to serious risks, such as increased anxiety, misinformation about treatments, and even downplaying serious problems that require specialized care.

“The topic allows for critical reflection on the limits and dangers of a society in which information on mental health is accessible, but often superficial and misinterpreted,” he evaluates.

Climate problems and their social impacts

In Brazil and around the world, climate issues have been the subject of a lot of news: from fires to floods, extreme events have occurred in the same year.

“Latin America has seen record carbon emissions due to the absurd amount of fires that have occurred, not only in Brazil, but in several countries in the region. We can also bring the issue of Rio Grande do Sul here, a specific section of a State, but not only because of the floods, but also for a social issue, given Brazil’s mobilization in aid of Rio Grande do Sul”, comments Beltrão.

“We can also think about the management of these cities, talking about politics, and whether there is management to deal with extreme situations. We have a whole issue that could be addressed not only on the temperature, which affected us very cruelly, but also on mobilization social”, he adds.
