Veteran journalists feel the cruelty of being sacked over Christmas

The end of the year confirms itself as a time of insecurity and sadness for television editorial teams

Instead of the festive atmosphere of Christmas, many broadcasters offer their employees the tension promoted by human resources: layoffs of professionals who work in front of and behind the cameras. The cost cuts seem to have no end.

On Friday evening (13th), Band News fired presenter Eduardo Castro. His two stints with the group totaled 18 years. “It’s part of life,” he wrote to his Internet followers. “Since I need to work, I hope we can see each other soon.”

The journalist’s optimism contrasts with the discontent of the category: hundreds of vacant positions closed, no prospect of improvement in the television market.

Among the others fired in recent days are some veteran reporters. Among these, Wilson Kirsche, of the Globo del Paraná branch, author of numerous articles for the “Jornal Nacional”.

He leaves the broadcaster’s screen after 28 years and important reports, such as the democratic crisis in South American countries. “…this time it was me who fell,” he complained on a social network.

His journalism colleague in Curitiba, Ana Zimmermann, was also fired. “When I was young I dreamed of being a journalist so I could tell stories,” he recalled in a post. His debut with the coveted Globo microphone dates back to 1995. His last story aired on 8 December on “Fantástico”.

“I have gained so many fans, admirers, so many great conversations and freshly brewed coffee from those who have welcomed me to tell their story. Also very annoying. No end time. But everything ends,” he says. The expert communicator says that, after 30 years, she will enjoy the end of year holidays without thinking about television.

Cleisla Garcia is another journalist admired by the public to end 2024 away from the job she does so well. She was released from Record, where she had been for 19 years. In 2007 he was part of the team that won the Vladimir Herzog Prize for a story about human rights. Before that, he worked for 12 years at the Globo branch in Goiânia.

A spiritualist, the journalist faced her dismissal with serenity. “It was the day of the last portal of the year. 12/12/2024. (end of cycles, new beginnings aligned with the universal purposes of the human soul),” he posted.
