Minister Cristiano Zanin, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized judges Sideni Soncini Pimentel, Vladimir Abreu da Silva, Marcos José de Brito Rodrigues and Alexandre Bastos to remove the electronic ankle bracelets. They are under investigation as part of Operation Ultima Ratio on charges of having sold sentences to the Court of Justice of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Since they will no longer be monitored, they will have to hand over their passports to the authorities.
Other precautionary measures are maintained, such as the ban on contact between suspects.
The decision comes after the minister authorized the return of judge Sérgio Fernandes Martins to the position of president of the Court of Mato Grosso do Sul, without an ankle bracelet.
In a note, the Court reported that, “with the full restoration of his prerogatives”, the judge resumed administrative and judicial activity until the end of his mandate.
In addition to the judges, relatives of the magistrates, an advisor to the State Audit Court, judiciary employees, a public prosecutor, entrepreneurs and lawyers are also under investigation.
The Federal Police sees signs of corruption, money laundering and criminal organisation.
The investigation is ongoing by the STF because there is suspicion of involvement of employees of the Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) in the process of negotiating the decision.
To date, according to the STJ, there is no evidence to discredit the actions of any minister of the Court.
Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, president of the Federal Supreme Court and of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the body that supervises the judiciary, went to Mato Grosso do Sul this month for an institutional event and, before the state magistrates , argued that no one should be convicted before trial.
