Inspired by Danny Lyon’s photographic book, Jeff Nichols’ Bikeriders immerses viewers in the legendary motorcycle club culture of the 1960s. But behind the poetry of Endless Roads, violence and chaos are never far away.
Rough and endearing performances
Tom Hardy plays Johnny Davis, a charismatic leader inspired by Marlon Brando in The Wild Team. Alongside him, Austin Butler plays Benny, a loyal and enigmatic young biker with a false air of James Dean, while Jodie Comer continues her path as an actor to follow the role of witness and narrator of this epic.
Jeff Nichols, true to his modesty and sobriety, adopts an almost documentary style, driven by minimalist dialogue and visceral performances.
A trip to America in the 60s
More than just a movie about bikers, The Bikeriders tries to capture a time when anything seemed possible. The reenactment is flawless, from the costumes to the decor to the chilling blues and rock soundtrack. Each scene breathes nostalgia for the freedom of the long past, where the America of workers and dreamers was expressed by the roar of engines.
Like Marlon Brando in The Wild Team, Nichols’ bikers go on a rampage without a specific goal in mind. why are they spinning Escape, live or just because they can? This film doesn’t provide the answer, but it does offer a raw and poetic experience that makes us want to casually walk around with our hair blowing in the wind.
