74 years ago John Wayne turned down a role that would have won him an Oscar for Best Actor

If John Wayne won an Oscar for his role as the $100 sheriff in 1970, he could have won a prized statuette 20 years ago! In 1949, director Robert Rosen offered her the lead role in a politically charged drama called The King’s Fools.

In this film, the main character is an honest and upright politician who comes from a village and finds himself the governor of his state by making compromises and alliances that cut him off from his family and former associates.

The film deals with the corruption that often comes with power and which leads a man to the point where he abandons his principles in favor of his ambitions and ego.

For John Wayne, the king’s fools are “Unpatriotic”. He rejects the script altogether and instead turns to the war film Iwo Jima, directed by Alan Dwan, a patriotic film that highlights American casualties during the World War II battle of Iwo Jima. Broderick Crawford plays the King of Fools.

A tense Oscar ceremony

It’s time for the 1950 Academy Awards, and it’s here that Wein suffers quite a setback. Nominated for Best Actor, he meets Kirk Douglas in The Champion, Gregory Peck in Iron Man, Richard Todd in The Last Voyage… and Broderick Crawford in The King’s Fools.
