The message was immediately celebrated and reproduced by leaders of the party, which is regularly accused of harboring neo-Nazis and which has several state directorates classified as “right-wing extremists” by intelligence services, which closely monitor the activities of its members.
Musk has made his AfD sympathies clear in the past, interacting with AfD politicians on the X network and questioning police surveillance of the party. Now, the approval comes two months before the next federal elections in Germany, in which the AfD appears with between 18% and 20% of voting intentions in polls and with the possibility of forming the second largest group of deputies in the German parliament (Bundestag).
Musk’s endorsement was posted in the form of a comment above the playback of a video by a 24-year-old right-wing German influencer named Naomi Seibt. She became known in 2020 by presenting herself as an “anti-Greta Thunberg” and propagating speeches denying climate change on networks. He also posted numerous compliments to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on his networks.
In the video commented by Musk, Seibt complained about the position of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – the German party leading the polls – of rejecting the possibility of forming an alliance with the AfD and sharing power with the extremists right-wing in 2025. Seibt’s criticisms are aimed directly at Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU and candidate for federal chancellor, who has taken a more right-wing turn in his party in recent months, but which continues to exclude the possibility of working with the AfD.
