If you were an avid television viewer in the 80s, you must have shared the adventures of Texas and oil with the Ewing family. For more than 10 years, Dallas was truly one of the most popular series of its time and remains a true must-see on the small screen.
Amid intrigue and manipulation, the show follows the travails of a wealthy dynasty led with an iron fist by the fearsome J.R. Several decades after the end of Dallas, the American actor Patrick Duffy, who played one of the main characters of the series, Bobby Ewing, recently reviewed his memories of the filming. Keanan and Lakin on the Give You Déjà Vu podcast (Through People.com).
“We shared a glass of champagne every morning.”
Among other anecdotes, the actor recalled his friendship with Larry Hagman, who played JR, and his first meeting with the latter, who came to the reading session dressed as a cowboy, wearing a hat and carrying two bags full of champagne bottles.
“We sat and drank champagne before we started reading Dallas pilots, getting to know each other.”Patrick Duffy recalls.
An anecdote that deserves a Tony, because the shooting of the series was no less watery.
“When we first started, we would work together on set every morning, we would plan to meet, usually at 6 or 7 in the morning.”– says Patrick Duffy.
“I went to MGM. We parked the cars, went to Hagman’s dressing room, opened a bottle of champagne. We shared a glass of champagne every morning to start the day.”
“He had three or four bottles of champagne.”
Patrick Duffy explained that unlike him, who was slightly relieved after this first cut, “Hugh kept going.”
“During the day, he drank three or four bottles of champagne. While working, then we would take a break for lunch, cross the street, because they didn’t offer alcohol in the canteen. We were going to the canteen. Backstage Tavern and had a few drinks and burgers then headed back for the second part of the day.”
“We did a little shot of tequila before the cameras cut because we knew it wouldn’t go live until they said, ‘Cut!’
If you’ve seen obvious signs of drunkenness on Bob or JR’s face while rewatching The Dulles episodes, now you know why.
