If you know the name Keyser Söze, then you’ve already seen or heard of the usual suspects from 1995. If so, then you know why it is considered one of the best detective films of its time, and why, many years later, the final revelation continues to surprise new viewers. Also, if you’re one of them, don’t worry, this article won’t reveal anything about the plot or its outcome.
The Usual Suspects takes us to the city of Los Angeles and tells us about “Verbal” Kinty, a short-lived con artist played by Kevin Spacey. The latter escaped death after the explosion of a cargo ship at the port in the middle of the night. The latter, questioned by the customs agent, assured that he did not know the circumstances of the tragedy. In exchange for impunity, he still begins to tell how the police were called six weeks earlier in New York on suspicion of theft. Next to him, four other suspects…
“The most beautiful ending in cinema!”
Aside from its final resolution, which is truly a piece of cake, the rest of Bryan Singer’s (X-Men) film is flawless. In writing we also find Christopher McQuarrie to whom we owe the latest Mission Impossible. The latter offers a puzzle-like scenario (appropriately non-linear) but mastered from start to finish, some of which have now become legendary. The Usual Suspects takes its viewers on a journey that will immerse them in the game!
4.4 out of 5 on the AlloCiné profile The thriller was well received by both audiences and professionals. Crowned with two Oscars, including Best Actor for Kevin Spacey, it above all boasts an impeccable cast, from Gabriel Byrne to Benicio del Toro.
“The Usual Suspects is, frankly, a genius and a very unusual film in terms of a thriller and a thriller that is almost genius.” (MaximeMaxf)
“A work that sometimes falls too short before its final twist, which is a shame given its many other qualities, both in its atmosphere and its knowledge of detail.” The usual suspects didn’t end up twisting our brains. (Benjamin A)
A must-see for coup lovers (visitor)
“A remarkably well-crafted play that benefits from a masterful script and impeccable cast. A timeless and profoundly intelligent film that stands out from the rest of the genre with its incredible final twist. Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful endings in cinema!” (September Girl)
If you’ve never seen The Usual Suspects or if you want to re-watch this great 7th Art classic, know that it’s leaving the Prime Video catalog on December 31st. After that it will be too late!
