‘Mufasa’ box office: ‘The Lion King’ prequel grosses $122 million globally

Prequel to The Lion King also debuts at the top of the Brazilian box office, beating Moana 2

Mufasa: The Lion King debuted at the top of the global box office, grossing US$122 million. Despite the good performance, the film directed by Barry Jenkins was below expectations, which projected an opening of US$ 180 million in the global total. The film premiered in Brazilian cinemas on December 19.

In the United States, the production raised US$35 million and came in second place, behind Sonic 3which led with US$62 million. Internationally, the biggest collection came from China (US$7.8 million), followed by France (US$7.7 million), Mexico (US$7.1 million) and the United Kingdom (US$5.5 million).


In Brazil, leadership at the box office

In the Brazilian market, Mufasa: The Lion King also debuted at the top of the box office, surpassing Moana 2 and the national drama I’m Still Herewhich came in second and third place, respectively.

According to data from December 20th to 23rd:

  • Mufasa: The Lion King it grossed R$20.87 million in its debut in Brazil, with an audience of 903,200 spectators.

  • Moana 2 recorded R$9.69 million in the period, accumulating R$145.75 million in total in Brazil.

  • I’m Still Here remains in third place, consolidating its performance among national films.
