No, this is not a joke. King of Pop Michael Jackson, who died in June 2009, considered buying the famous comic book house in the 90s to get his hands on Spider-Man.
Michael Jackson buys a Marvel comic book??? Good joke! Hey, no, this is more serious than that. Because if history holds true with Disney’s 2009 acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, the famous comic book house could have been bought by the King of Pop a decade earlier.
In fact, the latter celebrity was a fan of Spider-Man. So much so that in the 90s, before Tobey Maguire donned the Spider-Man suit in front of Sam Raimi’s camera, Michael Jackson even dreamed of making a movie about his favorite superhero. And, since you can never serve yourself better than yourself, why not wear the suit yourself?
The singer even met with Stan Lee, who was clearly not immune to the idea of Jackson, who wanted to buy the rights to Spider-Man. But when the comic book creator told him he would have to go through Marvel for such negotiations, Jackson considered buying the company.
Check out this short video of the singer in Stan Lee’s office. In a tribute to his creative genius, Jackson also floats the idea of developing a project with the Marvel man.
The idea of Michael Jackson taking over Marvel has long been rumored. In April 2020 — yes, it’s too late — the news was confirmed by another, the late singer’s nephew, Taj Jackson, in a podcast called Popcorn planet. He explains that his uncle tried to buy Marvel, not just the rights to Spider-Man as originally intended.
“It was Marvel and I remember it. I remember being with my brothers and he was talking about buying Marvel. He wanted to do it with Stan Lee. They talked and discussed. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen, I think they got in the way. I don’t know the reasons, but they definitely did it.”
Finally, the information may not be so much that Jackson wanted to buy Marvel, but that he wanted to do it with Stan Lee. If the idea had come to fruition, it’s safe to say that the future of the license would definitely have a different trajectory than Disney and its MCU.
