Jared Leto: “I signed up for ‘Morbius’ because it dives into the dark side of the Marvel universe”

Jared Leto and director Daniel Espinosa talk about the vampire ‘Morbius’ and how they’ve explored the darkest hero in Sony’s Marvel universe.

Let us remember that, although fragile, the agreement between Disney and Sony has made it possible for both brands to be responsible for and beneficiaries (in different measures) of the spider-man from Tom Holland. This has not only allowed his character to be part of the ambitious UCM, despite having Amy Pascal and company in the production of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ (Jon Watts, 2017), ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ (Jon Watts, 2019) and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘ (Jon Watts, 2021), but rather that Sony can expand its arachnid universe with various products from the catalog of Marvel Comics rights that it owns.

So while Thanos did their thing, at Sony they have continued to exploit their own universe with the irregular but successful ‘Venom‘ (Ruben Fleischer, 2018) and ‘Venom: There Will Be Carnage‘ (Andy Serkis, 2021), and that animated portent called ‘Spider-Man: A new universe‘ (Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, 2018).

No one expected their sinister vampire to come to light so quickly, or not at least to do so in such a prominent way, but the signing of Jared Leto headlining ‘Morbius‘ left no doubt, Sony was thirsty for blood.

As if this were not enough, a couple of moments from the first trailer confirmed that, indeed, the Parker de Holland is part (contextual) of his reality but, when the fans of the bloodsucker were already sharpening their fangs, a pandemic locked us up at home.

From the premiere confirmed on July 31, 2020, we went to March 19, 2021, then to October 8, 2021 and, finally, we have been able to sink our teeth on April 1, 2022.

In the interview that heads this article we have been able to speak with Jared Leto, absolute protagonist of the story and one of the great stars of contemporary Hollywood. After carving out a niche for himself in the industry with titles like ‘urban legend‘ (Jamie Blanks, 1998), ‘American Psycho‘ (Mary Harron, 2000), ‘Requiem for a Dream‘ (Darren Aronofsky, 2000), managed to endear himself to film students around the world with ‘The possible lives of Mr. Nobody‘ (Jaco Van Dormael, 2009) and academics with ‘Dallas Buyers Club‘ (Jean-Marc Vallee, 2013). After the disaster of ‘suicide squad‘ (David Ayer, 2016), has remained afloat approaching the greats in titles such as ‘blade runner 2049‘ (Denis Villeneuve, 2017) and ‘the gucci house‘ (Ridley Scott, 2021).

daniel espinosathe filmmaker, achieved his first success in his native Sweden with ‘Easy money‘ (2010), which allowed him to make the leap to Hollywood to work with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington in ‘The guest‘ (2012), along with Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman in ‘the boy 44‘ (2015) and with Jake Gyllenhaal, rebecca ferguson and again, Ryan Reynolds in the undervalued ‘Life‘ (2017).
