Glorioso takes the field with a new formation, recovers from the defeat on their debut and becomes the first major club to win the State Scudetto
Still with a reserve team, Botafogo beat Portuguesa 2-0, this Tuesday (14), in the opening match of the 2nd round of the 2025 Carioca Championship with a squad composed mainly of under 23 players, with the exception of Patrick de Paula, Raul and Newton —, Glorioso confirms its triumph at the Nilton Santos Stadium, recovers from its debut defeat and becomes the first major club to win the competition. Kauê Rodrigues opened the scoring in the first half, while Kayke Queiroz came off the bench to score his first professional goal and confirm the victory in the second half.
Botafogo had a much better attitude than their debut in Carioca and the external option worked. The team chosen by Carlos Leiria was more offensive and, although it did not have a great performance, the team behaved with confidence and controlled the game to seek the first victory in Carioca.
In this way Botafogo gained the first three points and moved up to 4th place, in the ranking area for the semi-finals. The team has even overtaken Portuguesa himself in the standings, but could still lose positions during this second round.
Portuguesa, on the other hand, who beat Bangu 1-0 on their debut in Moça Bonita, suffered their first defeat in this Carioca and remain with three points. The team has therefore dropped to fifth position and could still be overtaken by other opponents during this second round.
The game
Botafogo dominated the first half and took a 1-0 lead at the break. Despite not having a great performance, the team was the only one to create dangerous chances. Thus, Glorioso opened the scoring with a beautiful shot from Kauê Rodrigues, after an involuntary assist from Matheus Nascimento. Furthermore, the hosts continue to be fearful with Carlos Alberto and Vitinho, who play on the left flank. Portuguesa, however, failed to threaten the opponent’s goal and rarely went beyond midfield.
After the break, Portuguesa made three changes and tried to change positions in search of an equalizer. Thus, Zebra found themselves in danger with aerial plays and the visiting team even found the net with Lohan, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Botafogo’s response also came with set pieces. Kawan takes advantage of Yarlen’s corner kick and the header is saved by Portuguese goalkeeper Bruno.
However, a great shot from Newton left Kayke Queiroz in the face of the opposition goalkeeper and the striker, who came off the bench in the second half, found the net and scored his first professional goal for Botafogo. Furthermore, there is still time for Matheus Nascimento to have a goal disallowed after a wonderful counterattack by the home team. VAR flagged an irregular position at the start of the game and the score of 2-0 prevailed until the final whistle.
