Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet says it will not approve the deal until the group backs down from violations
The Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this Thursday, 16, that a “last minute crisis” with the Hamas is blocking Israel’s approval of a long-awaited deal to stop fighting in the Gaza Strip that will free dozens of hostages.
Netanyahu has said his cabinet will not meet to approve the deal until Hamas backs down, accusing it of reneging on parts of the agreement in an attempt to extract more concessions.
Izzat al-Rashq, a senior Hamas official, said the group “is committed to respecting the ceasefire agreement, announced by the mediators.”
US President Joe Biden and Qatar’s top mediator announced the deal on Wednesday, which aims to free dozens of hostages held in Gaza and end a 15-month war that has destabilized the Middle East and sparked protests across the world.
Netanyahu’s office had previously accused Hamas of backtracking on an earlier agreement that would have given Israel veto power over the release of prisoners convicted of murder in exchange for hostages. /AP
