According to the bank, resources have been allocated to rural producers, cooperatives, family farmers and agricultural enterprises to expand production, purchase machinery, storage and innovation.
BRASILIA-IL National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved financing of R$52.3 billion for the agri-food last year, we read in a note from the bank. The value is 26% higher than that released in 2023 (R$41.5 billion) and 92% higher than that approved in 2022 (R$27.2 billion).
According to the institution, resources were allocated to rural producers, cooperatives, family farmers and agricultural enterprises, for financing and investments for purposes such as expanding production, purchasing machinery and equipment, storage and innovation.
Last year, 191,231 direct and indirect BNDES loan transactions for agri-food were signed, according to the bank, 27.9% more than the previous year and 60% more than in 2022. The number includes contracts from Federal government agricultural programs (PAGF), stipulated available with subsidized interest rates from the National Treasury – and resources from the Social Fund.
“The BNDES is one of the main supporters of the Brazilian agricultural sector, financing the investments of both agricultural businesses and small farmers and cooperatives. Importantly, the increase in our agricultural credit is accompanied by public policies to promote a low-cost economy carbon emissions and environmental protection”, states the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, in the note.
Of the total amount made available by BNDES in agribusiness financing last year, R$38.2 billion was allocated to 183,822 operations under the federal government’s agricultural programs. In the second half of the 2023/24 Collection Plan, from January to June 2024, 57,001 transactions worth R$10.25 billion were signed. Another R$27.9 billion in 126,821 transactions related to the first half of the 2024/25 Collection Plan, from July to December 2024.
The bank highlighted that, of the total resources approved for agriculture in 2024, R$7.9 billion was released through BNDES’ own solutions, across 7,328 operations under the BNDES Rural Credit Line.
Among the BNDES operations for the agricultural sector in 2024, the bank approved financing of R$5.9 billion for Rio Grande do Sul in 3,523 operations through the BNDES emergency RS program. According to the bank, the program aims to mitigate and adapt to climate change and resume economic activities in the state.
