Santos comes back, tries to equalize, but fails to win against Ponte Preta

Peixe saw Macaca take command of the scoreboard in the first phase and, after the substitutions, managed to equalise, despite the low production

Santos lost their first points in the Campeonato Paulista. On Sunday evening (19th), when many of their reinforcements were starting for the first time, Peixe drew 1-1 with Ponte Preta. Macaca takes the lead through Jean Dias. In the second half Alvinegro Praiano equalized with Guilherme.

With this result, Santos shares the leadership of Group B with Guarani, with four points. However, Bugre has the advantage in the playoff criteria. Ponte is third in Group D, with four points, behind São Bernardo and Palmeiras.

Ponte plays better and takes the lead

The match started with great balance. Santos has the first chance, with a shot from Miguelito, which stops Diogo Silva. Then Ponte responds with a shot from outside the area by Serginho, who makes Brazão act for the first time.

Peixe also forced Diogo Silva into another save, following Tomás Rincón’s shot from outside the area. Ponte, however, played the match better and managed to establish himself. After a rebound in the area, Jean Dias had the ball in the area and shot towards the post. On the second occasion, in the 42nd minute, the number 7 goes up alone inside the area and opens the scoring with a beautiful header.

Caixinha moves, Santos equalizes, but doesn’t come out of it

Pedro Caixinha returned from the break with his changes. Ponte started better, remaining more in attack. However, Santos achieved a draw with the players who were on the field in the first phase. Lucas Meirelles won the ball behind the defence, he wasn’t stupid, he crossed low and Guilherme, for the third time at the Paulista, seemed to equalise.

Despite the quick equalizer, Santos was unable to maintain the vigor of their reaction. Diogo Silva worked little after conceding the equaliser. On the other hand, Macaca lost much of the intensity of the first phase and wasn’t even able to scare the opponent’s goal.

In the last minutes Peixe attempts the final blitz and goes around the opponent’s area. However, he failed to join the attack and did not reach the goal. The one who had the chance to win in the last move was Macaca. Renato receives the ball in the area and Brazão does everything to save Peixe. As a result, the score ended in a draw.

After the final whistle, Pedro Caixinha and Alberto Valentim had a disagreement. Ponte’s coach went to greet the Portuguese, who had been reprimanded for an argument in the first phase.
