The film starring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones hits theaters this Monday, 20
The director of The Brutalist, Brady Corbetguaranteed that it did not use Artificial Intelligence to alter the work of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jonesprotagonists of the film. The statement was made after the editor Dávid Jancsó admitting that he used AI to modify dialogue and scenarios.
To the magazine People, Corbet defended the choice of Jancsó“specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for greater accuracy”: “The goal was to preserve the authenticity of the performances of Adrien and Felicity in another language, do not replace or alter them, and this was done with the utmost respect for the art.”
“The performances of Adrien and Felicity they are completely theirs. They worked for months with the dialect coach Tanera Marshall to perfect your accents… The Brutalist is a film about human complexity, and every aspect of its creation was driven by human effort, creativity and collaboration. We are incredibly proud of our team and what they have accomplished here.”
What happened
In an interview with the news website Red Shark News (via NME), Jancsó stated that he used the AI software Respeecher to change the scene in which the character of Adrien Brody reads a letter out loud.
“I am a native speaker of Hungarian and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce. Even with the Hungarian origin of Adrienit’s not that simple. It’s an extremely unique language,” he argued. Jancsó.
He explained the decision: “We trained [Adrien Brody e Felicity Jones]and they did a fabulous job, but we also wanted to perfect [o sotaque] so that not even the locals notice any difference”.
Jancsó He also defended the use of technology, which was also used to modify the feature film’s setting. “It just makes the process so much faster. We use AI to create these little details that we didn’t have the money or time to film,” said the editor.
“It’s controversial to talk about AI in industry, but it shouldn’t be,” he said. “We should have a very open discussion about the tools that AI can give us. There is nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t already been done before.”
