The Catalan club ends up losing by two goals, but makes an incredible comeback
Barcelona remains firmly in second place in the overall Champions League table, now with 18 points. Playing in Lisbon, this Tuesday (21), the Catalan club achieved a historic defeat against Benfica, won 5-4 and showed strength in an important moment of the season.
THE GAME:
Already before the second minute of the game, Benfica took the lead, pushed by the fans. With a ball launched from the left sector, Barcelona’s defense fails to make the cut. After a cross into the area, Pavilidis sends it into the net: Benfica 1-0.
It didn’t take Barcelona long to equalize. After Baldé’s action, defender Araujo scored a penalty. On the shot Lewandowski moves goalkeeper Trubin and leaves everything tied: 1-1.
The sequence of goals doesn’t stop there and Benfica takes advantage of it to take the lead. After launching himself into attack, Szczesny came out of the wrong goal, collided with Koundé and the ball was cleared for Pavilidis. The attacker advances alone and, without a goalkeeper, pushes the ball into the goal: Benfica 2-1.
Better in the match, the Portuguese even increased their lead to 30. With another penalty, Pavilidis scored the third goal and gave the final numbers in the first half: Benfica 3 to 1.
In the second half, Barcelona seemed to be better, they created more plays, but they were unable to overcome goalkeeper Trubin. Until, when the ball was missed, Rafhinha scored. Trubin attempts a shot forward, but the ball goes towards the Brazilian, who heads it: Benfica 3-2.
The joy lasts only four minutes and the Portuguese team scores again. In an action on the left sector, the ball is crossed into the area for Pavilidis, but Ronald Araujo misses the cut and ends up scoring against: 4-2.
The match, which seemed to be decided in favor of Benfica, changes completely for Barcelona. The third goal came from another penalty kick. Lewandowski moves the goalkeeper and scores: 4-3.
In the 41st minute the Catalan club secured the equalizer. After an attempted corner kick, the ball is crossed into the area and defender Eric GarcÃa heads it home unmarked: 4-4.
Benfica still had a chance to win, when Di MarÃa was launched alone at speed from the left, came out in front of Szczesny, but the Barcelona goalkeeper saved with his foot. In extra time, on the counterattack, Raphinha comes down from the right, takes the marker and strikes: Barcelona 5-4 and final score.
In the last round of the Champions League, Barcelona will face Atalanta on January 29th, at 5pm (Brasilia time), playing in Spain. Benfica, on the same day and time, faces Juventus, away from home.
