‘The Walking Dead’ confirms the return of Rick Grimes and Michonne but not in film

They will arrive in 2023 with their own miniseries.

‘The Walking Dead’ has finally confirmed the return of Rick Grimes and Michonne in an unexpected way. Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira surprised their former ‘The Walking Dead’ co-stars during the series finale panel at San Diego Comic-Con International on Friday to make a big announcement.

The duo were originally supposed to reprise their roles as Rick and Michonne in multiple feature films responding to what happened to Rick when he was kidnapped by the mysterious CRM group.

Instead, Lincoln and Gurira will star in a six-episode miniseries in 2023 that will reunite Rick and Michonne to wrap up their stories once and for all. “I can’t wait to put my cowboy boots back on,” Lincoln told an excited crowd at San Diego Comic-Con. In it, in fact, Samantha Morton also spoke about Alpha’s past and the first trailers for ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ or Part 3 of season 11 of ‘The Walking Dead’ were revealed.

The Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M Gimple will oversee this as yet untitled limited series, with Lincoln and Gurira expected to executive produce and star.

“This is a moment ‘The Walking Dead’ fans have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne went on a search to find him the following season,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment from AMC Studios.

“What a great surprise for fans this Comic-Con, an end to the story that launched this universe and made television history. We couldn’t be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continue the stories of so many iconic and beloved characters from ‘TWD.'”

It’s unknown what other characters from ‘The Walking Dead’ may cross over with this limited series, as Daryl will get his own spin-off and ‘Isle of the Dead’ will put Maggie and Negan in New York City.
