A little-known filmmaker outside of cinephile circles, Brian Helgeland nevertheless has a pretty solid track record, despite the inevitable peaks of weakness. He was the screenwriter of the sensational thriller LA Confidential (1997), which adapted the flagship work of writer James Ellroy. Also mighty Mystic River, directed by Clint Eastwood and released in 2003. After moving on to directing, we owe him Violent Payback (1999), in which he portrayed Mel Gibson left for dead and seeking revenge.
In Legend, the filmmaker doubles as Tom Hardy’s twins, Kray; An authentic and terrifying story of two ruthless gangsters who reigned supreme Moving London From the 1960s, one is calm, ambitious and the organizer of their empire, the other is fiery, violent and even completely psychopathic. A masterful interpretation for this British actor who has become one of the must-sees of recent years.
Along with Tom Hardy, this criminal odyssey, characterized by humor, fights, revenge and betrayals, can count on the main actors: Emily Browning, Christopher Eccleston, David Thewlis and even “Kingsman” Taron Egerton.
This is not the first time that the crime brothers have taken up the subject of a film. Their fascinating and sordid story has already been, for example, in 1990 soberly titled The Krays in the heart, based on the screenplay of Philip Ridley, better known as a writer and playwright.
Bitter and violent, benefiting from a very careful reconstruction, the version signed by Brian Helgeland is definitely worth discovering (or re-watching!). It is available on Prime Video.
