History of the city of Sao Paulo

São Paulo was founded in 1554 by priests, including Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta, who founded the Jesuit College. The idea of the school would be to educate and train the natives according to the Jesuit lifestyle.

After the construction of the school, houses began to be built around the educational center, which later became a village. In 1711 the village became a municipality, thus creating the city of São Paulo.

The name was chosen to honor the Apostle Paul, as the school’s founding mass took place on the day the Catholic church celebrates the Apostle Paul’s conversion to Christianity.
