Godzilla leaves Netflix: Did you know there was a sequel to the 1998 film?

The first American iteration of Roland Emmerich’s famous kaiju, Godzilla, is leaving Netflix in a week. Despite the bad reviews, did you know there is a sequel?

What are you doing?

A ferocious storm rages in the Pacific, engulfing an oil tanker as huge lightning bolts light up the sky above French Polynesia. A giant footprint digs an ominous burrow across thousands of kilometers of forests and beaches in Panama. Ships are sinking off the coast of America and this terrible phenomenon is getting closer and closer to New York. Researcher Nick Tatopoulos is pulled from his research to help the United States track down the monster behind these mysterious disasters.

The first American co-production on the famous kaiju—until the 2014 reboot and the cinematic universe of MonterVerse—Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla is also the franchise’s least favorite film. The film is a remake of a feature film made in 1954 by Isro Honda, but it is only very loosely inspired by it and offers a completely new iteration.

The feature film was met with not-so-positive reception and even garnered several Razzie Award nominations, garnering a Razzie for Worst Remake. Even if the film isn’t free of flaws—between clichés and aging special effects—Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla was an entertaining spectacle in the late 1990s. Roland Emmerich’s film coat of arms.

The Forsaken Trilogy, the sequel to the series

Bad reviews prompted the production to rename the creature GINO (only known as Godzilla) 18 and Zilla in Japan. But above all, the trilogy project around kaiju planned by Sony Pictures Entertainment more than 20 years ago was completely abandoned at the time.

However, there is a sequel to Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla. In the same year, the director joined forces with Stephen Melching and created an animated series, soberly titled Godzilla, the series. It is a direct sequel to the movie as it tells the story of the creature born from the hatching of the egg that we see at the end of the movie.

Professor Nick Tatopoulos, who is the only witness to this explosion, considers the creature to be his mother, and thus he can control it to some extent. Therefore, this new Godzilla will be an ally of Nick and his team, which consists of doctors Elsie Chapman and Mendel Craven, hacking specialist Randy Hernandez, and Marianne Dupres, an agent of the French secret service sent to observe the monster.

Godzilla becomes a protective being to help the team fight other monsters and mutants, many of them as a result of the nuclear disaster in the film. Godzilla ran from 1998 to 2000, with two seasons and forty episodes.

The French were able to discover this series, which received better ratings than the film – namely the new Godzilla and the best and richest world of the TV format – on CanalJ and TF1.

The Godzilla movie leaves the Netflix catalog on July 31.
